RoHS : Restriction of Hazardous Substances.
RoHS stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances.” It is a European Union directive that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) placed on the European market. The RoHS directive was first adopted in 2003 and has since been updated several times. The current version, known as RoHS 3, restricts the use of ten hazardous substances in EEE, including lead, mercury, cadmium, and certain flame retardants. The directive aims to protect human health and the environment by reducing the amount of hazardous substances in electronic products.
It restricts the use of the following six substances:
- Lead
- Mercury
- Cadmium
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether
The benefits of RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) are:
Protection of human health and the environment: RoHS helps in the elimination or reduction of hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment, thereby reducing the risk of harm to human health and the environment.
Compliance with regulatory requirements: RoHS compliance is a legal requirement in many countries, including the European Union, China, and the United States. Complying with RoHS regulations ensures that manufacturers can continue to sell their products in these markets without facing legal consequences.
Improved product quality: Compliance with RoHS often requires manufacturers to use more advanced and safer production processes, resulting in improved product quality.
Competitive advantage: RoHS compliance can provide a competitive advantage for manufacturers in markets where consumers and companies demand environmentally friendly products. RoHS compliance is often seen as a selling point and can differentiate a company’s products from non-compliant competitors.
Reduced costs: By eliminating or reducing the use of hazardous substances, manufacturers can often reduce the costs associated with the disposal of hazardous waste and the use of protective equipment during production. Additionally, compliance with RoHS can reduce the risk of costly product recalls or legal penalties.
